Because the electric motor would be added resistance on the transaxle reducing the coasting distance. If he had regenerative braking ability then the motor would becomes a generator that could increase his range but I dont think his controller is programmed for that

Why put it into neutral? Just take your foot off and the engine current drops to zero. Most EVers put it in one gear and go (like an automatic)

I've always had a fond spot in my heart for those little Festivas. They're simply great cars. Very economical and utterly reliable. My neighbor took one, tore out the back seats and anything not absolutely necessary to reduce weight, and replaced the engine with a a 20hp one. It gave him a 2 seat, 85mpg, 55mph, 500+ mile range enclosed motorcycle. And he did it cheap! I'm impressed with your conversion efforts but I'll take his solution over yours. Great vid though. Gets people thinking.
